PROBLEM
A client approached CMF Engineering with assistance in designing, manufacturing, and testing custom awnings for their newly constructed modular structures. They emphasized the need for awnings to be noncorrosive, compliant with International Building Codes (IBC), and aesthetically appealing.
Additionally, they had previous challenges during installation of awnings on-site. They highlighted the need for a simplified bolted design with high tolerance for adjustment - crucial for efficient field installation work.
SOLUTIONS
CMF's Phoenix engineering team took the design specifications from the customer and established a comprehensive CAD model using our professional CAD design services. Our engineers determined that 6061 Aluminum was the optimal material due to its lightweight properties and superior corrosion resistance - ideal qualities for long-term durability in various environmental conditions.
To accommodate hole tolerance and simplify field installation, slotted connections were applied to the tiebacks. Our team conducted finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate distributed loads across the awning structure.
Once the design was verified through digital analysis, our Phoenix manufacturing facility performed an experimental study by applying controlled loads to a prototyped awning using our custom fabrication capabilities. This hands-on testing approach, combined with our engineering expertise, ensured the final product would meet all performance requirements.
RESULTS
With lightweight 6061 aluminum construction and high hole tolerances implemented in the design, this allowed for effortless installation of the awning in the field. The experimental study demonstrated that the awning could withstand up to 80 pounds per foot with minimal deflection, exceeding standard structural requirements.
This performance was verified and stamped by a professional engineer, ensuring that all manufactured awnings comply with IBC codes.
